The correlator is a subsystem of VLBI, so to speak, the "glue" that mixes the data from separate antennas together. The processed data achieves high angular resolution, which would be given by a single dish with the effective diameter of the maximum separation among the antennas.
The Mitaka correlator is an FX-type correlator, which was designed for Japanese-led space VLBI program, VSOP mission. Currently, it is dedicated to correlation process among antennas related VERA, JVN, KVN and EAVN.
