Observation Facilities and Instruments --
Esashi Earth Tides Station

The Esashi Earth Tides Station is located about 20 km east of the Mizusawa campus and consists of an observation tunnel and a gravity measurement room.
The 150m long tunnel is dug into a granite bedrock and offers very stable environment for reliable measurements of the Earth tides and crustal deformation. The instruments in regular operation are quartz tube extensometers, a volumetric strain meter of borehole type, and water tube tiltmeters. The laboratory room in the tunnel is used for observations and experiments those are sensitive to ground vibrations, temperature changes and radio wave interference.

Esashi Tunnel

Quartz tube extensometers and water tube tiltmeters.

Laboratory Room

Very quiet and stable laboratory room annexed to the tunnel.

Sensors of Tiltmeter

Sensors of the water tube tiltmeter and the quarts tube extensometer developed at Mizusawa.
