Facility tour

VERA Mizusawa Station(Mizusawa VLBI Observatory)

You can see it by walking around the observation course at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan Mizusawa. You can see the VERA Mizusawa Station 20m radio telescope up close. Please note that the Oshu Space & Astronomy Museum(JapaneseOnly) and the Kimura Hisashi Memorial Museum(Japanese Only) have separate closing days and admission fees.

VERA Iriki Station

You can take a walk around the 20m radio telescope at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan's VERA Iriki Station and get a close-up view. It is located at an altitude of 540m on the Satsuma Peninsula, and offers views of the East China Sea to the west and Kinko Bay to the east. VERA Ishigakijima Station

Of all the VERA observation stations, Ishigakijima is located the most southwestern (24°N, 124°E) and was completed in May 2002, one year later than the other stations. With the completion of the Ishigakijima station, VERA's observation network, including the Mizusawa station, will have the longest baseline (distance between telescopes) in the world at 2,300 km. Ishigakijima is a scenic subtropical spot surrounded by coral reefs, and at night you can see the Southern Cross and other stars that cannot be seen from the mainland.

VERA Ogasawara Station

It is located 1000km south of Tokyo on Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands. The antenna is lit up orange at night, earning it the nickname "Orange Pepe." It is also one of the highlights of night tours of Chichijima. Brochures are available near the door, so please feel free to take one. Enjoy the 20m radio telescope as it conducts observations against the backdrop of Ogasawara's beautiful night sky.
