What's VERA ?

Target Sources

The main target sources of VERA are H2O and SiO masers. These maser sources are usually found in star-forming regions and Mira-type variable stars. About 1000 of sources are already known, and will be observed with VERA. As phase-reference sources, VERA will also observe thousands of QSOs and radio galaxies.

Distributions of H2O maser sources in the galactic coordinate. The galactic center locates at the center of the plot, and the horizontal dotted line corresponds to the galactic plane. Blue spots are masers in star-forming regions, which are rather confined to the galactic plane. Red crosses are those in Mira-type variables, which are scattered over the whole sky. Blank part of the right bottom is in the southern hemisphere and unobservable from Japan.
